Why Levantine cuisine? What does this mean?

Where does it come from, what's special, what will be different tonight?

The name “Levante” is the region of the eastern Mediterranean. The Mediterranean cuisine is referred to here as “Mediterranean Levantine Cuisine”, often also briefly referred to as “Levante Cuisine”.

The typical feature of this kitchen is the aromatic and pleasantly light way of cooking, with many spices and herbs, refined by oriental influences with tasty accents. The dishes are also lovingly prepared according to local habits and presented beautifully. The flatbread is homemade.

What will be different tonight than usual in the restaurant?
We are usually used to the fact that everyone at the table may order a starter, followed by a main course and sometimes a dessert at the end.

The “Levante”, on the other hand, is a communal meal where family and friends dine together and enjoy it. There are many small dishes on the table, each one tries everything as you please. Everything is shared and there is something for every taste. These starters are called “meze”, spoken [mese].

There is a lot of talk, sometimes loud, there is laughter, you enjoy, you take your time, it takes hours - completely different than here, especially in German culture.
In southern countries, eating together is given a much higher priority, especially the evening meals are an important part of the day, because now it's getting a bit cooler in the south, now people are living!

The “Mediterranean Levantine Cuisine” brings us something of this attitude towards life. The “meze” can be warm or cold, and are ordered and served on many small plates. Often the whole table is covered with colorful bowls and plates, everyone tastes everyting, it almost seems as if everyone is intertwining. In addition, usually they'r drunking wine, you can toast together, it is pure joie de vivre, it is fun. It is a shared experience.

In the meantime, the meze with its various variations has also become the main course. You decide whether starter or main course.

To top it off, the icing of teh cake is something sweet. The desserts often have a hint of the Orient and sometimes they're really sweet. Or there are also small baked pieces of cake, there are various "Helva", which means "sweet" in Arabic. In addition you drink a mocha or tea ... A good end to a nice evening - which was not just a meal.
In southern countries, you don't usually pay separately at the end, because you meet regularly with friends, sometimes one pays, the next the other. A constant give and take, live and let live that connects.

That's why you will find a lot of “meze” (starters, cold and warm ) on the menu of the “Restaurant Levantine”, the main dishes with meat or fish play a secondary role.
